MOTORISTS using the Penang Bridge and the second link can now turn to live traffic updates to help them plan a smoother journey. Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd (JKSB) public relations and communications
deputy manager Azizi Azizan said the new system should be ready on
Sunday.
“Three out of four signages have been installed in Jalan Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu before the exit to the Penang Bridge from George Town, in Seberang Jaya heading towards the entrance of the Penang Bridge and before the second bridge interchange in Batu Kawan. “The fourth, which will be in Batu Maung on the island, will be set up soon,” he said when contacted yesterday. Azizi said the signages would be in three colours — green, yellow and red — to show the traffic situation on both the bridges. “If the light shows green, it means smooth traffic on the bridge, yellow means moderate traffic and red means heavy traffic jam. “The system is to give road users a choice of either using the Penang Bridge or the second bridge based on the traffic updates,” he said, adding that the signages installed about three weeks ago were believed to be the first in Malaysia. “The signages are monitored by JKSB and the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM),” Azizi added.
Meanwhile, even before the second Penang bridge is open to the public, many people from near and far took the opportunity to explore it through cycling or walking. Some were seen capturing a glimpse of the sunrise while others just wanted to be on top one of the biggest landmarks in the state. JKSB public relations and communications deputy manager Azizi Azizan advised the public to avoid going up to the bridge as it was still considered under construction.
“The bridge is still not open to the public and they should avoid going there.“The bridge will only be open on Sunday after the opening ceremony by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak,” Azizi said. The 24km bridge, spanning over 16.9km over the sea, links Batu Kawan on the mainland with Batu Maung on the island. Najib and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor will transverse the bridge at 8.30pm on an open top double-decker bus to officially the longest bridge in Southeast Asia. There will be plenty of fun-filled activities to celebrate the opening on Saturday including a concert at the bridge’s entrance on the island.
